The Bridal Event in Willow Grove

I just wanted to put up a quick blog post thanking all of you wonderful brides who came out to the Willow Grove Mall Bridal Show this past Sunday. Tim and I chatted with over sixty brides and grooms with wedding dates from May 2009 to October 2011!

I continue to be awed by the love, excitement, and preparation that I see in preparing for "the Big Day".

I wanted to take pictures during the show but we were simply too busy so here are a few shots before the madness began…

I got some fresh daffodils for the last show. This time the flowers du jour were bright red gerbera daisies.

Some of the details…

(Shout out to my absolutely awesome graphic designer Ed of Loose leaf Concepts for helping me design the kick @** brochures!)

So thanks once again for coming out. I hope you brides and grooms fell in love with a vendor or two.

Happy Planning!

Spring & Summer 2009 Wedding Special

So you know I just moved back to the Philadelphia area and I had to leave behind some truly magical clients and fellow vendors in California. Because of this, I'm lonely here and needing some fresh 2009 loving.

I'm offering something that I very rarely do for weddings… a discount!

That's right, I'm offering 15% off the coverage rates for weddings that are held before August 1st, 2009. This still includes everything a normal booking does: pre-event planning, a hardcover proofbook with your wedding day images, post-production editing, online posting of your images for family and friends, and a complimentary engagement session. This is fantastic news to you procrastinating brides and grooms out there. Or maybe you're having a short engagement and frantically planning a wedding in the next five and a half months.

At any rate, this is an awesome deal and you're unlikely to see it again!

So hop on it and call (415.515.3575) or email (info@lindsaydocherty.com) me asap to set up a consultation. I can't wait to work with you!

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will some new pleasures prove
Of golden sands and crystal brooks,
With silken lines and silver hooks.
- John Donne

Fine print: Offer only available for local weddings. Wedding must take place on or before July 31st, 2009. 15% off coverage rates only (wedding day, rehearsal dinner, second photographer) – albums, prints, digital images, and overtime costs are at regular price. Based on availability. Because we do receive numerous inquiries, we are unable to reserve a date without a contract and retainer.

Happy Valentine's Day! Can y'all dig that?

It's so fitting that Outkast's "Happy Valentine's Day" comes on as I'm writing this post.

Since I didn't get my act together in time to post desktop wallpapers for February, I'll do a special mid-month post in honor of Valentine's Day. Here are some images for you to use that will hopefully inspire a little romance and sweetness this month. Click to download it and see it at its huge size and resolution.

*Please note these images are made available for personal use only.

I also wanted to let you know about some great deals going down this time of year…

Amazon.com is offering up a free download of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On". This deal is only for Friday, 2/13 and Saturday, 2/14. Marvin Gaye and love go together like, well, Marvin Gaye and love.

Lots of Philly restaurants are having specials to bring in you and your honey. Here are more offers under $50.

This isn't just a day for couples; those with kiddies can join the festivities too!

I was at DSW today and they had so many shoes on clearance. Don't know if it's all stores or just the one at 62 Greenfield Avenue in Ardmore, but check it out if you dare.

Oh, and I should throw it out that Lindsay Docherty Photography is offering a pretty sweet deal too: a discounted Boudoir Session in the month of February. Get $75 off the basic session and $200 off the Boudoir package that includes a hair and makeup artist, champagne, and a 5x7 album. Indulge a little! Contact me for more information.

Happy Valentine's Day
Every day the 14th!
I don't think y'all heard me!
I just wanna say Happy Valentine's Day!
Every day the 14th!
Can y'all dig that?

[the value of] an Engagement Session

I love, love, love shooting e-sessions. A lot of people have heard me go on and on about this before, but I really mean it – engagement pictures are so worthwhile for many reasons…

1) The connection. Wedding days are busy and your photographer will be right there throughout the entire thing. They will be your shadow and it's a good idea to get to know them so that you have one less stress on your day. (A good photographer will be a helpful and calming element on your wedding day.) So are you comfortable with this person? Do you even like this person? If you get bad vibes during the engagement session, you can act on it before the big day.

2) The process. An engagement session is a test run of sorts. You get to know each other's personalities and the photographer gets a really good idea of what the couple does and doesn't like from their pictures. Do you have a good/bad side? Is there a certain pose that makes you uncomfortable? Are you hopelessly uncoordinated in heels (like me)? (Tip: plan your hair/makeup trial for that day to take full advantage.) I take note of each personality and quirks so that I can be an even better fit for them when the wedding day comes.

3) The look. There are a million photographers out there and each has his/her own style. When you see your engagement pictures, you can give feedback about what you really loved (and what you only kinda loved). Do you like tilted pictures? Do you dig the old 70's effects? Do you want to see more black and white? Do you want more close-ups? Do you want more scenic shots? You can look at all of the pictures in the world, but when it's your face that you're seeing, it's easier to know what you like and don't like.

4) The quality time. I hear over and over how much fun couples have on engagement sessions. Really. You can pick a location where he proposed or the place where you had your first date or some other location that holds nostalgic, personal value for you (even the home that you two share). It's strange at first but you get to be goofy and sweet and fun and just play together. With all the stress of wedding planning, it's great to take some time out to just PLAY.

5) Oh yeah… the Pictures! You get these awesome shots of just you and your honey bunny (aka schnookums, sweetie-pants, bumble buns, googly bear…)! Sure, you may have some that you took at the last bbq, but your head is chopped off and your friend is in the background trying to hit on that girl from across the street. You need quality pictures of the two of you, casual pictures that don't come from your wedding day.

Bonus 6) The awesome things you can do with the pictures. Besides just having the pictures to frame around your house, the e-session pics are perfect for all sorts of wedding elements. Here are just a few ideas that I've come across…

Announcement for local newspapers – A lot of hometown newspapers have sections devoted to upcoming weddings and other announcements.

Your wedding website

Guest sign-in book – a guest book that you'll actually look at after the wedding! The pictures are laid out on the pages with space around them to allow guests to write notes and sign their names. I absolutely love these and get so psyched when a couple orders them because they're such a great way to combine an album of your pics with messages from the people you love. This is an alternative to another popular option – the photo signing board.

Invitations and/or Save the Dates – you don't have to have just text and clipart! There are so many ways to incorporate your images into the very first things your guests will see. Another bonus is that no other couple will ever have the same invites. Extend this to the rest of your paper products and use the pics on your ceremony programs, menus, and any signs that you have up.

Table Numbers/Centerpieces – Bring signs to your engagement session and use the resulting pictures as your table names.

Favors – Oh man, where to even begin with this… I have seen so many kick @** ideas that have used people's pictures for wedding favors. Here is a very small sample of what's out there:
  • Mini albums
  • Mix CDs with images of the couple on the CD label itself

Martha Stweart had an excellent article that mentioned photo playing cards, photo confetti, photos on cookies and lollipops, and photos on the bottoms of Hershey's kisses.

Accessories – There are a lot of companies out there and several Etsy sellers who can make jewelry out of your pictures. Surprise your guy with personalized photo cufflinks on the wedding day or make a brooch or locket to attach to your bouquet.

Engagement pictures are so worthwhile. Wedding day pictures are completely essential, but e-session pictures can be more timeless and personal since it's not about the wedding day and the festivities, it's about you as a couple.

This is why engagement sessions are complimentary when you book with me. It's as much for me as it is for my couples. I learn and play and show up on the wedding day as a friend rather than just another vendor.

Happy Planning!

The Bridal Event in Philadelphia

I just wanted to thank everyone who came out to the bridal show on Sunday on The University of Pennsylvania's campus in Philadelphia. We had a great time and met some really fabulous brides!

It was my first time with this particular booth and I was very happy with how it turned out. I had several people come up and tell me how happy and energizing it felt. The color green paired with fresh flowers are definitely the way to go.

Thanks again to everyone who came by and relaxed on our couch!

Tina + Stephan: Winery Wedding in Los Gatos with Julie Cheshire

As promised, here are some images from a beautiful wedding I shot with the talented Julie from Julie Cheshire Photography this past winter.

The couple, Tina and Stephan, were a lot of fun. We showed up several hours before the ceremony so we really got to take our time with the getting ready, couple, and formal portraits.

The bridesmaids carried bouquets of white calla lilies while Tina had an all white bouquet of calla lilies, roses and what else, stephanotis (get it: Stephan, stephanotis…).

I loved Tina's cute little bun with the mini gardenias that smelled lovely every time she passed by.

As you can see here, Tina was awesome!

The event was held at Testarossa Vineyards in Los Gatos, CA. They had some great sites for pictures and we were there at just the right time for the leaves to change to a truly stunning yellow (yes, it really looked like that in real life!).

I absolutely love this tender moment.

I must say that I was incredibly impressed with Stephan's dipping skills. We call this the "Hollywood Kiss". Getting that low is quite a feat.

The ceremony was held in their wine cave later that evening. It was a very cool set up with dark chiavari chairs and the wedding party at the top of the hall flanked by crystal, orchid, and candle branch displays.

The reception was beautiful too. More white orchids and silver chargers on every table and a very classy three-tier square cake. The placecards were made of individual corks to bring in more of the winery feel.

The couple had a choreographed first dance to Etta James' "At Last".

It was a beautiful evening. The details were beautiful and classy and the whole party was down to earth and really laid back. It was just perfect.

All the best!

The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clovers
The night I looked at you

Moving Forward

Bad, blogger, bad!

Oh my, so I have a lot of make up work to do. I promise that I have been thinking of you but the last few months have been crazy, to say the least. Here's a brief rundown of LDP news…

Moved across the country! I am now settled into my new home in Narberth, PA which is right outside of Philadelphia. I grew up around here on the Main Line and am looking forward to getting reconnected with old friends and eating water ice again.

Website update. My site (www.lindsaydocherty.com) now has two sites within: weddings and lifestyle. It was time to expand and build a separate site for weddings. The lifestyle site is still dedicated to the portrait wing of LDP.

ImagingUSA. Every year in January the Professional Photographers of America puts on a big convention and expo. This year it was in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona and hosted the incredible Anne Geddes as the keynote speaker. I went, I learned, I had fun, I met up with old friends and new.

Bridal Shows. I have two wedding fairs coming up in February and I've been putting a ton of time into preparing for them. You should definitely come out if you're in the market for wedding professionals in the Philly area. The first show is tomorrow (February 8th) from noon to 4pm at Perelman Quad on Penn's campus. The second is on February 22nd at the Willow Grove Mall from 11am to 6pm. There might just be a bonus for couples who book after seeing me at the show! Go here for more information.

Technology. Who can really stay away from Facebook? Not I. Lindsay Docherty Photography now has its own Facebook page and you can (and should!) become a fan asap. There will be a few tidbits that get announced on my Facebook page before they're out anywhere else so you really don't want to miss out! I'm also now updating my Twitter account regularly so you can keep tabs on your favorite photographer and her exciting adventures through Twitter. How's that for keeping you all in the know!

So I know I still have weddings, portrait sessions, and monthly desktop images to catch up on and you'll be seeing those in the coming weeks. See you soon!
