I Run to Stop Multiple Sclerosis

Last year I ran to help stop Multiple Sclerosis. It was a truly emotional and gratifying experience which is why I’m doing it again this year. I've been training for the last few months to run two half marathons this year and my very first full marathon in January. I'm doing it to raise money for the prevention, treatment, and cure of MS.

Multiple sclerosis isn't fatal. A diagnosis doesn't mean it's time to run through a bucket list. But what it lacks in fatality it makes up for in disability and incredible challenges. It is a chronic, progressive disease.

Multiple sclerosis turns the body against itself and attacks healthy parts of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, optic nerves). Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Weekly to daily injections can help reduce the attacks for some people but there is no cure.

I'm Running to Stop MS at the Chicago Rock n Roll Half Marathon and the Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon but I need your help. I'm raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society which researches prevention, treatment, and cures, educates, and provides services and programs.

Please support me by donating whatever you can muster. Last year I met my goal of $1500. This year I'm aiming for $3000. Every little bit helps. Consider $26 - the distance I'll be running in January. One less t-shirt at Old Navy, tickets and popcorn at a movie, or a few drinks at the bar is all I'm asking.

Donate here.

A million thanks,
Lindsay

A few facts:
• Multiple sclerosis affects 250,000 to 350,000 people in the United States; about 2 million people are affected worldwide.
• About 200 new cases of MS are diagnosed in the U.S. every week.
• MS is the most common chronic disabling disease of the central nervous system in young adults.
• MS affects 1 in 1000 people in Western countries.
• The most common attacks involve:
- vision: blurring of vision, double vision (diplopia), optic neuritis, involuntary rapid eye movement, total loss of sight.
- coordination: loss of balance, tremor, unstable walking (ataxia), vertigo, clumsiness of a limb, lack of coordination, paralysis
- fatigue
- speech and swallowing: slowing of speech, slurring of words, changes in rhythm of speech
- bladder and bowel control
- sexuality: impotence, diminished arousal, loss of sensation.
- cognitive function: problems with short-term memory, concentration, judgment or reasoning
• There is no "typical case" of MS. They are all different.
• The cause of MS is still unknown. It may be caused by a virus, although it is unlikely that there is just one MS virus.

Wedding Photography at New York's Tarrytown House Estate: Emily + Chris

Emily and Chris were the fantastically playful couple that came in second place in the Lindsay Docherty Photography Best of 2010 Canvas Giveaway for their engagement session romping picture. You’d better believe there are already friends out there campaigning for the 2011 contest.

The photography I have for you today are from their gorgeous wedding up at Tarrytown House Estate in Irvington, New York. The day was a little drizzly and prevented us from having the ceremony out on the grounds but the event was spectacular. I told them this that night, but this was a family that absolutely oozed with love. I feel weddings bring out the best in people but it was obvious in every encounter I watched that this family was genuine and warm and loving. And you could just tell that it wouldn’t matter what was going on – this was them and it was incredible.

Okay, enough with the sappiness. You came here for pictures!

And yes, Chris was just as chic in his black and white wingtip shoes…

We brought Emily into the lobby to prepare for her first look (aka “first sight” or “reveal”) with Chris. I love these so much!

We gathered the families for some formals before the ceremony began.

In addition to bridesmaid dresses that were all slight variations on a theme, each of the ladies carried bouquets of different flowers in the same purple tone (by Daniel Florals & Events). This was such a beautiful way to create a cohesive feel without being identical. There were blooms of hydrangeas, lisianthus, roses, stock, and Emily and Rachel’s that combined all of them with delicate sweet peas. Loved them!

Emily was a glowing bride. There was a grin on her face the entire day. Exactly how it should be!

The ceremony was held in the Lynden Room.

I was able to grab the newlyweds for a few minutes at the beginning of cocktail hour for some shots in Cellar 49, the onsite speakeasy, and around the building.

Their reception was out of this world. The décor was to die for! Vine-covered shepherd’s hooks, candles in lanterns, moss, and ball jars with assorted garden flowers in purples, lavenders, and whites filled the room for a look that was truly a Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Emily and Chris entered and shared their first dance as husband and wife to Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”. I think they told me they didn’t have a choreographed dance but they were twirling and lighting up every inch of the dance floor and looked so happy and wonderful doing it.

The night continued on with much dancing and laughter.

Emily’s sister and maid of honor, Rachel, regaled us with stories of their childhood plays – particularly Beauty and the Beast in which Emily stepped up to play all secondary characters. That is something I would have loved to have seen as Emily apparently acted out and voiced all of the parts in the intro.

A special shout out to Ashley, who put me in touch with Emily and Chris. I can’t thank you enough, Ash!

My heart totally melted from the impromptu dance by Emily and her brother, Gabriel, to the Rainbow Connection. Somewhere along the way, this family was taught to dance.

What a fabulous wedding. Emily and Chris, thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing me into the warmth, kindness, and love that was so apparent on your wedding day. It was truly lovely.

So I won't hesitate, no more, no more
It cannot wait, I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate
I'm yours

Extended Engagement Session in Maryland: Alyssa + Kyle

He calls her "Princess" and I'm sure she calls him something like "Snuggle Bunny Boo" but he wouldn't dish. We had a very full day of shooting around Maryland for Alyssa and Kyle’s extended engagement session. It was torture to not overload the blog with pictures from it!

I’ll let them give you all the details, but they met at a friend’s party while at Penn State together. Forget dinner and movies – their very first date was a the ice skating rink at Penn’s Landing where they were witness to a proposal right there on the ice. Kyle’s proposal to Alyssa was at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse where he slipped the maître d’ the ring and it arrived later on a platter where Kyle dropped to one knee.

They moved around a bit and eventually ended up in Bel Air, Maryland together. We started the session in the complex where they live. You’d never know that were surrounded by cars on all sides, would you?

We jetted down to the adorable downtown Havre de Grace. This historic little town at the mouth of the Susquehanna River was such a great idea. There were so many little nooks and crannies, bright walls, and people watching going on. I learned that they love going camping, drinking wine, and playing board games. Though I don’t think they meant that they do all three at once, it sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

Kyle had driven his motorcycle down so we could catch a few shots of them with the bike.

We took a quick trip to Bomboy’s for ice cream. I absolutely love detours like this and these pictures were so much fun! Mucho thanks to Kyle for getting me a mint chocolate chip!

We were able to play in golden hour while at the boardwalk that runs along the Millard J. Tydings Memorial Park from the Concord Point Lighthouse to the City Yacht Basin there. The place was gorgeous and the temperatures dropped a few degrees to make the rest of the session not so sweltering.

Alyssa and Kyle, thanks so much for showing me around your hood! I can’t wait to see what you two do with the Hotel du Pont in the spring!
